    Adjoining is the adjective from the same idea: an adjoining room is the room next door that shares a wall — and often a door — with yours. Hotels sell adjoining rooms to families who want to be together but not all in one room. For land and buildings the word still feels a little formal, but in the hotel sense it is ordinary. Though actually, adjoining is stronger than "nearby". Nearby can mean down the street; adjoining means touching. If two rooms , you could in theory knock on the shared wall and be heard.
