Activation is making an electrical system or a chemical process start working — the start itself, or the process of starting. With machines and electricity, something was waiting, and now current can flow: the activation of an alarm, a sensor, a card. In chemistry, and in the body, activation means a reaction or a substance is kicked from “ready” into “doing its job.” The word is a noun; the doing-word is activate. Though actually, people stretch the same idea to phones and accounts (you activate a SIM, then activation is complete) and to software: something was there but not live, and now it is live. Labs, manuals, and IT all like it; it feels neutral to formal.
