Across-the-board means a change hits everyone or everything in a group, not just one part. A company gives an across-the-board pay rise, and the newest worker and the boss both get it; a school makes across-the-board cuts, and every department feels them. You will hear it in news, business, and . It is a little formal, but not rare. Before a noun it usually keeps the (across-the-board cuts). After the verb, people often drop them: the cuts were across the board. The picture behind it is an old betting board at the : a bet “across the board” covered every result listed there, not just one. That is why the phrase now means “applying to the whole lot.”
