Accoutrements are the extra things you carry or wear for a particular activity or way of life — not always the main thing itself, but the kit around it. A soldier’s accoutrements might be belts, pouches, and straps; a photographer’s might be bags, extra lenses, and clips; someone living “the camping life” might talk about the stove, the lantern, and all the other accoutrements. It is a rather fancy, slightly old-fashioned word. People often use it with a little smile, as if the pile of stuff is almost too much. You almost always hear it in the plural. American spelling is sometimes accouterments.
