Accession usually means officially taking up an important position or joining an important group. Most often you'll meet it in history class about kings and queens: 'the accession of Queen Elizabeth II to the throne' means the moment she officially became queen. It's also used for a country formally joining a group of nations, like 'a country's accession to the European Union'. In a library, an 'accession' can also just mean one new item added to the collection — a much smaller, everyday use of the same idea: something new officially added.
