Accelerando is a music word. When a score says accelerando, the playing should get gradually faster — not jump to a new speed, but pick up bit by bit. Players often see the short form accel. Like piano, forte, and ritardando, it is Italian, because Italian marks are the old common language of the page. You can use it as an adverb (play this accelerando) or as a noun (an accelerando into the last chorus). Writers sometimes borrow it for anything that is speeding up; that is a stretch. Its home is music.
