An acacia is a tree of warm countries, often with leaves and small flowers in yellow or white balls or . Many kinds have thorns; some give a useful gum. English uses the word for a wide family of such trees, not for one garden pet. You meet it in nature writing, on honey labels, and in talk about dry, sunny land. Though actually, what a student in Taiwan already pictures is often the 相思樹 — a fair hook, and a close member of that group — while an English book may mean another yellow-flowering kind from Africa or Australia. Australians often say wattle for their own trees of this sort; that is a local name, not a different idea. The English word is a little botanical in everyday talk; people may just say “those yellow trees”.
組成From Latin acacia, from Ancient Greek ἀκακία (akakía), a name for a thorny tree. The Greek may come from a word for “sharp”, or it may be older than Greek; scholars are not sure. First in English before 1398. Doublet of cassie.
