Abysmally is the adverb from abysmal: it tells you how someone did a thing, or how badly a quality shows. The team played abysmally; the soup was abysmally salty; she slept abysmally and woke still tired. Same strength as abysmal — very bad — but it needs a verb or another adjective to hang on. Though actually, the old link with abyss is even less alive here; almost nobody hears “deeply” in it any more, only “terribly”. Everyday English, a little dramatic, the same register as the adjective. It is not a softer or politer form; it is the same stamp, moved onto how something happens.
