Abusive describes cruel words or physical violence used against a person. An abusive partner hurts the other person with hits, control, threats, or ugly language. Abusive language is speech meant to wound — insults, put-downs, shouting meant to crush someone. Though actually, in loose everyday talk people sometimes use abusive just for “very rude swearing,” which is thinner than the full meaning. In news, in school safeguarding, and in the law, it often points to a pattern of harm, not one sharp joke. The noun and verb underneath is abuse: to abuse someone is to treat them in that cruel way. It is a heavy word; teachers use it carefully.
組成abuse (cruel or violent treatment; also cruel language) + -ive (makes an adjective). From French abusif, from Latin. Equivalent to abuse + -ive.
