1. 1

ABTA is a British organisation for travel agencies and holiday companies. Members promise to treat customers fairly. The practical point families care about is this: if your package holiday is cancelled, or the company collapses, ABTA’s rules are meant to help you get your money back. It used to be spelled out as the Association of British Travel Agents; people still say ABTA, and you will see the letters on UK holiday and booking pages. Though actually, it is not a worldwide travel police, and it is not the same thing as travel insurance, even if people talk as if the logo were a magic shield. It is a UK trade body. If you are booking a trip that has nothing to do with Britain, ABTA may not come into it at all.
