Abstinent describes someone who is living the practice of not having something they might otherwise enjoy — most often alcohol, often sex, and in religious life sometimes food for a time. It is the person-word that sits beside abstinence, the practice-word. Doctors and recovery groups say “she has been abstinent for a year”; that is careful health English, not playground English. A teenager would more likely say “I don’t drink” or “we’re not doing that.” You can, more rarely, use abstinent as a noun for such a person, but it sounds old and stiff; today it is almost always an adjective. Though actually, it looks like a twin of , and they are not twins. Abstinent is closer to “none of this, for now or for good.” is closer to “only a little.” Listeners will often guess alcohol if you do not say what the person is staying away from.
組成From Middle English and Old French abstinent, from Latin abstinēns, the “-ing” form of abstineō “to withhold.” Same family as abstain. The rarer noun use grew out of the adjective.
