Abrogation is the act — or the official fact — of ending a law, a treaty, or a practice in a formal way. If abrogate is the doing, abrogation is that doing named as a thing: “the abrogation of the treaty.” You will meet it in the same places as the verb: parliaments, courts, diplomats, history books. Nobody talks about the abrogation of a picnic. Though actually, you also meet “the abrogation of responsibility,” a heavy way to talk about people stepping away from a duty. The picture is still the same: something that should hold is being taken off the books, or treated as if it were.
