Abraham is a man in the Hebrew Bible, the Old Testament. Jewish teaching looks back to him as the father through whom the Jews became a people. Christian and Muslim teaching also honours him as a father of faith (in Arabic his name is Ibrahim). In the story, God promises that Abraham’s family will grow into a great nation. The hard scene students meet in class is this: God asks Abraham to kill his son Isaac as a test of trust. Abraham is willing to obey; then God stops him, and a ram — a male sheep — is offered instead. People tell this when they talk about faith, obedience, and what a person will give up. Abraham is also used as a man’s name in English. Writers say Abrahamic for the religions that trace a line back to him.
組成The name came into English from Hebrew, through Greek and Latin, then Old English and Middle English. Genesis explains it as “father of a multitude.” Some scholars think an older meaning was “father is exalted,” and that the Bible’s own explanation came later.
