    The ablative is a form of a noun in some languages, such as Latin and Finnish. That form shows movement away or separation — from the town, off the table. English does not have an ablative. We just use little words like from, off, or out of, and we leave the noun's shape almost the same. If you study Latin, you will spend a long time on this case. Though actually, the tidy story (“ablative = away from”) is tidier than Latin itself. Latin's ablative is a big bag: it can mean from, but also with, by, in, or at, depending on the sentence. The name comes from a Latin word meaning “taken away,” which is why textbooks lead with “away.” Finnish is closer to the simple picture: the ablative often really does mean “from off” a surface.

組成From Latin ablātīvus (“expressing removal”), from ablātus (“taken away”), from auferō (“to take away”). The name means “the taken-away case.” The engineering sense (material that wears away in heat) was formed later from ablate + -ive.
