To abet someone is to help them do something wrong or against the law — not help with homework, but help with the harm. You urge them on, make it easier, stand with them in the act. In law you will hear it almost always in the pair aid and abet: to help and to encourage the crime. The can be as guilty as the person who did the main act. It is a formal, legal, news-report word. You would not say you abetted a friend who borrowed a pen. You might say a company abetted fraud, or that silence abetted the bullying — there people stretch it a little, from crime toward any wrong they want to name. The old picture behind it is setting dogs on, urging, baiting.
組成From Middle English abetten, from Old French abeter, “to entice,” from a- (“to”) + beter (“hound on, urge, bait”). That beter piece is from Middle Dutch or Old Norse, from a verb meaning “cause to bite, bait, incite.” Another path through Old English is also offered: ā- + bǣtan, “to bait,” from the same Germanic source.
