Aberfan is a small town in South Wales. In 1966 a huge pile of waste from the coal mines — a spoil tip on the — slipped after rain. It fell onto a school and nearby houses. 116 children and 28 adults died. In Britain the name is not a travel word; it is the name of that disaster, still spoken with care. People who were children then, and families in the valleys, still carry it. You will see it in news on anniversaries, in history books, and in talk about mine waste, safety, and who was to blame. Say the name quietly. It is a real place where people still live, not only a headline.
