    Abed means in bed — lying there, still in bed, not up yet. It is an old, way to say it. You will meet it in older stories and poems more than in talk: someone is still abed at noon; a sick person lies abed for days. People today almost always say in bed. Abed is an adverb, not a thing: it is not “a bed.” It can sound gentle or a little old-fashioned, not stiff in a courtroom way, just from another time.
