1. 1

Abbottabad is a city in the north-west of Pakistan, up in the hills. Most English never needed this name — it is not London or Tokyo — until May 2011. That month, US special forces killed Osama bin Laden in a house there. Bin Laden led al-Qaeda, and the world had been looking for him for years. The shock was not only that he was in Pakistan; it was that he was in Abbottabad, a city that also holds the Pakistan Military Academy, where the country trains its army officers. People asked how such a famous wanted man could live so near that school. In English you meet Abbottabad in news, history, and films about that raid. You do not use it as a normal word for daily life. Say it as one place name. The end is not the English word bad.
