AARP is a very large American organisation for people aged about fifty and up, especially people who have stopped working, though many members have not. It used to be called the American Association of Retired Persons. It gives members information and help, and it has a real influence on the US government when laws are being made that affect older people — health care, pensions, and the like. It also sells insurance, offers discounts, and publishes a magazine. In American conversation, “AARP age” is a slightly teasing way to say someone is getting older. You will almost never need this word outside US news, US forms, or American TV. Though actually, it is not a government department; it is a private membership group, even though it is huge and political. In 1999 the full name was dropped and it became just AARP, partly because “retired” no longer fitted everyone.
