An aardvark is a large animal from southern Africa with a very long nose, strong claws, and big ears. It comes out at night, breaks into termite mounds, and eats small insects with a long sticky tongue. It lives in burrows in the ground. Early European in South Africa thought it looked a bit like a pig that lived in the earth, which is how it got its name — though actually it is not a pig, and it is not an either, even though people lump it in with animals that eat ants. It is its own kind of creature. You mostly meet the word in nature programmes, in children’s alphabet books (it is handy when you need an animal for A), and as a slightly funny, memorable English word.
組成Borrowed from Afrikaans aardvark (now rare), also erdvark, from aarde (“earth”, from Middle Dutch aerde) + vark (“pig”, from Middle Dutch varken). Colonists saw a pig-like animal that burrowed.
