In Britain, an A-road is a main numbered road: smaller than a motorway, larger than a B-road. Each one has a number, like the A1 or the A40. An A-road can be a wide dual carriageway that feels almost like a motorway, or a slower road through villages with shops and crossings — the letter A does not tell you how big it is, only that it is a major route on the map. Though actually, visitors often say highway for all of these; British people usually keep motorway for the fastest roads and A-road for this class. You will not hear A-road used for roads in Taiwan or the US; it is a British labelling system.
