999 is the telephone number you call in Britain when you need the police, the fire service, or an ambulance. It was the first emergency number in the world, set up in the United Kingdom in the days of rotary-dial phones, because 9 suited that kind of dial. You say “nine-nine-nine.” It is the British counterpart of American 911: same job, different digits. Hong Kong also uses 999, which some students here will already have heard. In Taiwan you still use 110 and 119, not 999.
