911 is the telephone number you call in the United States when you need the police, the fire service, or an ambulance right now. The US chose it in the 1960s in place of Britain’s older 999, as a better way to avoid accidental calls on the new push-button phones. You must say “nine-one-one,” never “nine-eleven”: that other pronunciation is for 9/11, the 2001 attacks. Even before those attacks, the phone number was already “nine-one-one.” Official papers often write 9-1-1, with dashes, so the three digits stay separate. Though actually, if you are in Taiwan you do not call 911 at all — you call 110 for the police and 119 for fire and ambulance.
