    9/11 is a short name for 11 September 2001, the day terrorists used planes to attack New York and Washington, D.C. Thousands of people died, and English speakers use “9/11” for the attacks themselves, not only the date on the calendar. It comes from the American way of writing dates, month before day, so September 11 is 9/11. In Taiwan and in Britain you would more naturally write 11/9, which is why this little code is easy to misread. People say “nine-eleven.” It is a heavy word, used in news, history, and ; it is not a joke and not a phone number.

    9/11 是 2001 年 9 月 11 日的簡稱，那天恐怖分子用飛機攻擊紐約和華盛頓特區，造成很多人死亡。英語裡，「9/11」不只指日期，也常指那次攻擊事件本身，口語中人們也會說「nine-eleven」。這個寫法來自美式日期，月份在前、日期在後，所以 9/11 就是 9 月 11 日。台灣和英國比較習慣把日期寫成日在前、月在後，也就是 11/9，所以這串數字很容易被看錯。
