9/11 is a short name for 11 September 2001, the day terrorists used planes to attack New York and Washington, D.C. Thousands of people died, and English speakers use “9/11” for the attacks themselves, not only the date on the calendar. It comes from the American way of writing dates, month before day, so September 11 is 9/11. In Taiwan and in Britain you would more naturally write 11/9, which is why this little code is easy to misread. People say “nine-eleven.” It is a heavy word, used in news, history, and ; it is not a joke and not a phone number.
