A 747 is a very big passenger plane built by Boeing, an American company. It was the first jet — a huge that can take more than 400 people — and for years it was the plane you pictured when someone said “long-haul flight.” People say “seven forty-seven.” You still hear “” used loosely for any giant plane, though actually that nickname started with this one model; a 737 or an A380 is not a 747. Many airlines have now stopped using 747s for passengers and put two-engine planes on the same , but you still see 747s carrying cargo. The number is only Boeing’s model number, not a count of engines or seats.
