4-H is a US club for children and teenagers, often in small towns and on farms. It is not a school subject and not the army. Kids join to learn real skills — growing plants, caring for animals, cooking, science, making things, speaking in front of people — and to practise being useful in their town. There are projects, camps, and shows.
It began around farm life more than a hundred years ago, and many people still picture a child with a farm animal at a county fair. City clubs exist too now, and the projects are much wider. Adults volunteer as leaders; it is public and wholesome in tone, not and not slang.
Taiwan has its own youth groups, so you may never join 4-H. You will still see the name in American films, news, and school books.
The four H’s are the first letters of Head, Heart, Hands, and Health — the organisation’s old motto. Head is thinking and learning; Heart is caring and being a good neighbour; Hands is making and doing; Health is looking after your body.
