    This is a short, informal name for Vietnam. United States soldiers who fought in the Vietnam War often said the 'Nam for the country and for the war they were in. The stands for the missing Vi-. You still hear it in old war films and in stories from that time, mostly in American voices. Younger people, and anyone speaking , just say Vietnam. Though actually, it can feel heavy or dated now — it carries that war with it, so it is not a light, friendly nickname. It names the country, not a person.
